Electrician in Kinston, NC

Plant electrical, machine moves and the residential work that comes with a city that has been building things for a long time. About 20 miles up the road from our Trenton shop.

Built for plant work

Kinston has a working industrial side: the Global TransPark, the manufacturers and processors around it, and the shops and warehouses that support them. For those customers, an electrician isn't someone who shows up for a broken outlet. It's someone who understands that every hour a line is down costs money, and who can plan the work around production.

That is the core of what CDS does in Lenoir County:

  • Machine and equipment hookups for new lines and replacement machines, from the disconnect to the controls.
  • Panels, switchgear and feeders, including additions when a facility outgrows its distribution.
  • Conduit and wire run to industrial standards, exposed and labeled so the next person can trace it.
  • Temporary power for shutdowns, outages and rental generators.
  • Lighting for production floors, warehouses and yards.

More detail is on our industrial electrical page.

Moving a machine in Lenoir County

What sets CDS apart in Kinston is that the electricians and the riggers are the same crew. When a machine has to move into, out of or across a building, we disconnect it, rig it, move it, set it and wire it back up, for equipment up to 50,000 pounds. You don't have to line up one company to unhook it and another to haul it and hope they show up in the right order.

If you're planning a move, it helps to have these ready when we walk the job:

  • The machine's weight, or the nameplate and model so we can look it up.
  • Door widths, ceiling heights and any tight turns along the path.
  • Where it's going, and what the floor there is rated for.
  • The electrical requirements at the new location: voltage, phase and amperage.
  • The window you have: a weekend, a shift change, a planned shutdown.

Kinston's older houses

Kinston also has a lot of homes wired decades ago. We replace panels, upgrade services, add circuits and track down problems for homeowners and landlords, the same careful way we work in a plant.

Power and permits in Kinston: Most of the city buys power from the City of Kinston's municipal utility; outside the city it may be Duke Energy Progress or a co-op. Since 2023, Lenoir County Planning and Inspections has handled inspections for the city as well as the county. We pull the permit either way.

Before the power goes back on after a flood

The Neuse set record crests in Kinston during Floyd in 1999 and again during Matthew in 2016. After a flood, electrical gear that was underwater, whether it's a home panel or a plant's motor control center, has to be inspected before anyone energizes it. We do that inspection, repair or replace what's damaged, and get it signed off.
